The Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) is still high in Indonesia. When compared to 10 other ASEAN countries, Indonesia is among the top 3 with the highest MMR under Laos (292/100,000 population), Myanmar (185/100,000 population) and Indonesia (177/100,000 population). Below Indonesia are Cambodia (160/100,000 population) and the Philippines (144/100,000 population).
The high AKI is associated with mortality during childbirth. Death during childbirth is the result of complications during childbirth that begin with the health status of the mother during pregnancy even before pregnancy occurs. Basic Health Research data in 2018 shows that there are 17.3% of pregnant women who experience protein energy deficiency and 48.9% of pregnant women with 48.9% anemia which are risk factors for complications during childbirth.
Efforts to reduce maternal MMR during delivery should begin with improving the nutritional status of the mother before and during pregnancy, especially increasing energy and protein intake. Energy intake can be increased by increasing the intake of carbohydrate sources (rice, tubers, flour foods such as cakes, etc.) and fat sources by using cooking oil in food processing. Coconut cooking oil is the right cooking oil to increase the energy intake of pregnant women and during pregnancy, because it contains medium chain fatty acids which are easier to digest and metabolize. by the body. While protein intake can be increased by consuming food sources of protein either from animals (meat, fish, chicken, eggs) or from plants (nuts and their products).
The combination of increasing intake of carbohydrate sources and protein sources and the use of coconut cooking oil for processing is the right combination to avoid protein energy malnutrition in pregnant women and during pregnancy.
